Made By Labour

Made By Labour is a fascinating and engaging history of the UK labour movement between two pivotal dates – 1780 when the sense of a labour movement first became palpable, and 1924 when labour was not only organised, not only had a clear political identity, but also stood on the thresh-hold of government.

Historians Nick Mansfield and Martin Wright have pulled together a remarkable collection of things – banners, placards, registers, documents, boxes and tools, from this period – things that were literally made by labour as well as for Labour.

I have to say it is a beautifully presented collection that rewards every dip into its pages with the back story and context of every item accompanying it’s glossy illustration.

But what is the history of the project to bring together this fresh and hitherto largely piecemeal view of history?  What is the relevance of the collection to our digital age lifestyles?  And what are the favourite pieces in the eyes of Nick and Martin?

The answer to these questions and many more are to be found in my interview with Martin for the Labor Radio Podcast Network’s Labour History Today.

If you thought you knew your labour history, or if you just wish you did,  I’d urge a listen!

Made By Labour is published by University of Wales Press at £18.99 for hardback, paperback and e-book versions.
